Griffin, Ga: 1888 Mills, one of the Top 10 home suppliers to the U.S. market, will no longer produce towels domestically.
The facility, which has roughly 50 looms running, will cease production in April. The decision was primarily driven by rising operational costs, which “have made it increasingly difficult to maintain a sustainable manufacturing platform in the United States,” the company said in announcing the change.
[NOTE: The original version of this article reported 70 looms in operation. That number has been amended here.]
The plant has been in operation since 1996 and was one of the last in the industry to remain running after most towel manufacturing moved off-shore in the early through mid-2000s. It has serviced a portion of 1888’s retail and hospitality businesses.
Corporate offices, warehousing, and distribution operations in Griffin will remain open.
1888 Mills will continue to focus on its globally owned vertical manufacturing operations, it said. In addition to terry towels, the company produces bedding, sheets, kitchen textiles and commercial apparel.
“We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Griffin community, our dedicated workforce, and our loyal customers for their unwavering support throughout our nearly 28-year journey. The decision to close Griffin manufacturing was not an easy one, but necessary for our company’s continued growth and success,” said Rob Sayre, CEO at 1888 Mills LLC.
