ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has initiated the development of a new apparel unit in Keonjhar's Jatra village in Banspal block under its corporate social responsibility initiative, Project Nirman. Designed to help support local self-help groups, the facility will be named the Gandhamardan Apparel Unit.

The project is designed to give women across Keonjhar sustainable livelihood opportunities through the Gandhamardan Apparel Farmer Production Company, Apparel Resources India reported. The organisation comprises over 480 women from 80 local self-help groups.

While the land will be provided by the FPC and villagers, AM/NS India will construct the complex. The facility will include a production area with 75 stitching units, a store, office, sales counters, restrooms, and DG backup to ensure uninterrupted operations. Once complete, the infrastructure is expected to support the FPC’s business growth in line with the objectives of Mission Shakti and the Odisha Livelihoods Mission.

A foundation stone-laying ceremony was held in the presence of Dr Fakir Mohan Naik, MLA, Telkoi, and senior representatives from AM/NS India and local administration. Around 500 women self help group members and community participants also attended the event. Naik commended AM/NS India for supporting the economic empowerment of women and pledged government assistance in facilitating school uniform procurement, which would generate additional income for the apparel unit’s workforce.
