The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Monday collaborated to host a buyer-seller meeting aimed at exploring business opportunities, addressing tariff challenges and strengthening trade relations in the textiles sector.

The event themed ‘CII- Government of Tamil Nadu Textile Buyer – Seller Meet & Product Showcase’ was presided over by Ok Boung, Secretary of State of MoC, and Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, Ambassador of India to Cambodia, in Phnom Penh on April 7.

The event was organised to explore potential business opportunities within Cambodia’s textile sector, with representatives from the yarn and fabrics industries in attendance.

During the event, the MoC Secretary emphasised, “Cambodia needs to transform challenges into opportunities, enhance its competitiveness, integrate into regional and global supply chains by implementing these measures, expand into new markets, strengthen its competitive capacity, increase production capacity, connect with global value chains and attract investment to emerging industries.”

In her remarks, R Lalitha, IAS, Director of Textiles for the Government of Tamil Nadu, highlighted that Tamil Nadu, renowned for its journey from fibre to fabric, is home to numerous textile clusters and leads the nation as the largest exporter of ready-made garments.

She added that despite representing just six percent of India’s population, Tamil Nadu stands as the second-largest economy in the country, ranks first in terms of good governance and empowers its industries with a workforce comprising 50 percent women.

Richhpal Singh, Counsellor (Political & Commerce) of the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Albert Tab, Executive Committee Member of TAFTAC and Nandha Gopal, Investment Facilitator Guidance of Tamil Nadu, were presented.

According to the CII, it is a prominent industry-led organisation committed to advancing India’s development through strategic partnerships with industry, government and international entities.

In response to current global uncertainties and climatic challenges, Indian sellers actively sought buyers and collaborators for joint partnerships in textile manufacturing between India and Cambodia, aimed at strengthening international business relations and fostering growth within the textile industry.

The CII, with direct membership of over 9,000 companies and an indirect reach extending to more than 365,000 enterprises across 294 industry bodies, plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s industrial ecosystem.

With 70 offices across India, 12 centres of excellence and 8 international offices, CII maintains institutional partnerships with over 300 counterparts in nearly 100 countries, serving as a trusted platform for both Indian industry and the global business community.
