GREENSBORO – Apparel brand Cone Denim has expanded its partnership with hemp innovator BastCore following the successful launch of the former’s latest collection.
In April, Cone Denim launched a range of garments containing hemp and US cotton, dyed with a naturally grown indigo dye.UNi
“Cone is extremely proud to work closely with an industry-recognised company like BastCore as we advance our commitment to provide more sustainable, alternative fibre options to our denim community,” said Cone Denim president Steve Maggard.
BastCore boasts a patent-pending technology and proprietary process said to produce clean, mechanically processed, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and USDA bio-preferred hemp fibre out of its site in Alabama, USA.
Compared with conventional cotton, hemp is said to require 50 per cent less water, no chemicals – such as pesticides and herbicides – and is believed to have high rates of carbon sequestration, in turn benefitting the environment.
Cone Denim’s collection, debuted at the Kingpins trade show in Amsterdam this summer, is said to have been well received.
With the company keen to improve its sustainability credentials, it’s expanded its collaboration with BastCore, though it’s not clear in what capacity hemp will be used going forward.
“With a shared goal of pushing new sustainability levels, our partnership with BastCore is creating exciting opportunities that support US agriculture and its use of world-class practices and responsibly sourced products.
“Cone does not take its leadership in sustainable innovation lightly and is always searching for new ways to collaborate across the industry to drive innovation, increase traceability and lessen environmental impact.”
BastCore CEO, Coleman Beale, added: “When BastCore began working with Cone, it was clear to us that they had the expertise to develop an industry leading hemp denim product. Just as important to us, was Cone’s commitment to sustainability, traceability, and support of local farmers here in the United States.”
