With the increase in cotton prices, many spinning mills have now been resorting to increasing the polyester and viscose contents in cotton to reduce the price of yarn. The step may be beneficial for the spinning mills, but the new development has been leading to disputes as some traders have reported fading of colours at the time of dyeing and printing.
“We have come to know about cases where problems were faced during the dyeing of polycot and viscose yarns. Some export containers have been delayed when it was noticed that the cotton part of the fabric had proper finishing but the polyester part had some problems.
Improper blending has been creating disputes between the buyers and the sellers. There are instances of export materials being rejected because of this,” said Bharat Chhajer, former chairman of Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL).
Kantilal Sanghvi, the vice-president of Maskati Kapad Market Mahajan, said, “We have been witnessing an increase in blending of cotton with polyester to keep the price low. The problem arises in cases of improper finished products. Ahmedabad is known for cotton textile and when some processing houses fail to maintain the quality for the blended yarns, disputes are bound to rise.”
Gujarat-based spinning mills started blending polyester and viscose with cotton after a steep rise in cotton prices. Blending helps spinning mills in bringing down the costs by about 15%.
An office-bearer of the Ahmedabad Textile Processors’ Association (ATPA) said, “Ahmedabad has the expertise for cotton, but in fabrics where the polyester proportion is high, we face problems in processing. Some yarn-makers also fail to properly blend polyester and cotton and some processing houses also do not have the expertise to process blended yarn.”
