Suez - A joint venture in Egypt is to construct a new textile factory which will aim to produce environment-friendly fabrics and seamless garments using a range of smart manufacturing methods.

The project between Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone and Chinese industrial developer TEDA-Egypt was established in 2008 as part of China's Belt and Road initative. TEDA now Egypt operates a seven square kilometre site in the Suez Canal economic region which is currently home to around 140 companies from a range of different industries and has attracted more than US$1.6 billion in investment, creating more than 5,000 jobs.

Reports in Middle-East-based news service Zawya say the facility, known as Egypt Cady Textiles, will be the largest in the TEDA region, covering an area of more than 145,000 square metres.

The $60m project will be built in three phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2023 and the whole project to be finished by the end of 2024.

According to Zawya, the facility will specialise in polyester fabric production, dyeing and printing and once fully operational, will have a production capacity of about 50,000 tonnes of eco-friendly textiles and eight million pieces of seamless clothing per year, most of which will be destined for the export market.
