Sustainability is a widely talked about topic and a prominent one. However, it is more than recycling plastic and turning it into new products. Sustainability is the use of fabrics that can decompose easily, ones that will not harm the environment more than the industry already is. Sustainability is caring for the environment with genuine efforts towards creating products that truly care for it through all stages of production - cultivation, processing and delivery.
Gencrest Bio Products Pvt. Ltd., is one such company that is engaged in manufacturing plant based, cellulosic fibres that are sustainable from the get go. Part of the Samta group of Companies, Gencrest is revolutionising sustainable textiles in India through their brands - Vybrana and Raysha. Read on to know more about the various initiatives taken by Gencrest towards sustainable fashion in the Indian textile market.
Gencrest was born from a vision of sustainability. They believe in progress that doesn't compromise the planet. That's why they've dedicated themselves to pioneering new solutions in the textile industry, focusing on eco-friendly cellulosic fibres. The textile industry has an urgent mandate to move from Petro derivative – synthetics to sustainable raw material. Garments made from cellulose fibre are breathable, soft and most suited for human skin and they are bio degradable with negligible end of life impact. There are numerous fibre yielding plants which offer unique properties but some of these fibres have challenges on spinnability and can often pose a challenge. A sizable amount of post harvest crop waste , usually plant stems (bast) is rich in cellulose and the disposal of this agri waste poses a huge cost burden and environmental concern.
Gencrest observed that there is an urgent need and unique opportunity of developing efficient and sustainable processes for converting such cellulose rich biomass into spinnable textile grade fibres to offer sustainable raw material options to the apparel industry. Unlike other natural and regenerated eco-fibres, there is zero exploitation of agricultural lands which are used for cultivation of food. Gencrest upcycles fibres from bio waste only at the end of plant life cycle and harvests by farmers. No farmers are exploited during this process. Following this ideology, they launched Vybrana and Raysha - Oeko Tex certified brands.
Vybrana - The world’s first truly sustainable fibre
Vybrana generates cellulosic fibres upcycled from banana biomass using a revolutionary enzymatic technology. This zero-waste optimised process delivers a scientifically superior fibre that benefits both the industry and the environment. Vybrana utilises a pioneering green enzymatic process, free from harmful chemicals. This innovative approach minimises environmental impact while maximising efficiency. Our zero-waste optimised process ensures every part of the banana biomass is utilised, further reducing the environmental footprint.
Raysha - Hemp for a Sustainable Future
With a dedicated R&D effort, Gencrest has developed a unique proprietary technology in Raysha where cellulose rich agri biomass are upscaled into spinnable fibres using its patent process. Avoiding the pulping and regeneration MMCF route which consumes high energy & heavy chemicals, Gencrest has adopted a resource light and environmental friendly FIBERZYME process. By using bio molecules instead of harsh chemicals the process delivers truly sustainable fibres retaining their natural wellness properties.
Vybrana and Raysha offers yarns in ranges of Ne 7s to 30s with blends of both banana and hemp as well as with other fibres such as recycled polyester, cotton, lyocell, polyester staple fibre (PSF), viscose staple fibres (VSF), regenerated poly cotton, modal, and many more. Their yarns are widely used by various industries such as Denim, Home textiles, apparels ( knitting ), etc. to name a few.
In conclusion, Gencrest has truly revolutionised the idea of cellulosic fibres by not just opting for biomass and agri waste, but also adopting less polluting methods of production.
Experience their collection of pioneering innovations at stall no. E 35/36 at the Textile Fairs India show happening on 18, 19, 20 July 2024 at Hall 2, 3, 4 Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 10 am to 7 pm.
