New York –  Piggybacking on its broader sustainability initiatives, Sky Home USA is bulking up the range of fibers used in its eco-friendly constructions.

Fibers derived from banana trees, pineapple and soya join a portfolio that includes hemp, recycled cotton and recycled polyester. The multiproduct supplier will offer customized sustainable blends in shells, top of bed and blankets.

“If a customer wants a recycled polyester/ recycle cotton/cotton blend, we’re happy to do that. If they want to put in viscose or Tencel, we’ll put it in,” said Marci Cohen, who heads product development.

In addition to creating a softer hand, Sky Home’s blends help keep pricing in check.

“The mantra of our CEO Zaki Bashir is: ‘It can’t be sustainable if it’s not affordable,’” she noted.

At New York Home Fashions Market, the company is also making big push in cotton, polyester and blended products for throws and blankets. In addition, the showroom will offer new collections for bath towels, shower curtains and “some really interesting sheet stories,” she said.

Sky Home will also feature a “best-of” selection of show-stoppers that parent company Gul Ahmed debuted in January during the international Heimtextil expo.

“They introduced 450 new items at Heimtextil,” said Cohen. “That adds to the magic of Gul  Ahmed. “Every time you turn around, you’re seeing something you haven’t seen before.”

Ahmed Fraz, president of Sky Home USA, noted that sustainability is about more than fibers.

“It’s a complete process, it’s 360 degrees,” he explained. It’s using less water, using electricity from wind power and solar panels, reusing some of the steam that we generate.”

As a supplier to Europe, Gul Ahmed has tooled its operations to meet standards in all countries that it serves. “When it comes to chemicals, for example, we are using mostly 99% European chemicals” in all of its production, he added.

The manufacturer is also the largest importer of U.S. cotton in Pakistan.

Sky Home USA’s New York showroom is located is located at 267 Fifth Ave., 2nd floor.
