Municipal corporation commissioner Shena Aggarwal held a meeting with the Ludhiana Dyeing Industries’ Association at the MC’s Zone-D office on Monday.

The commissioner has asked the dyeing industry to ensure that water discharged from their units is treated according to the laid down standards. Aggarwal said that the corporation would get the samples of the discharge checked and if those failed the test, then the sewer connection of the unit would be snapped.

She said the Union ministry has issued strict instructions to make the canal-river water pollution-free. Strict action would be taken against the units which would not comply with the rules, she added.

Superintending engineer Rajinder Singh said that the commissioner has asked the dyeing association to further improve the results of the water being treated at the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP).

We are being wrongly portrayed as villain: Industry
Representative of the dyeing industry Ashok Makkar, Bobby Jindal, Tarun Jain, Rahul Verma, Ajit Lakra claimed that the industry was being wrongly portrayed as villain for pollution of Sutlej river, whereas the MC’s untreated sewer is directly entering and polluting the Buddha Nullah.

They said if any dyeing unit owner was found violating the conditions, the industry would side with the civic body and ensure strict action and closure of such units.

Tarun Jain Bawa of Bahadurke Knitwear and Textile Knitwear said, “ New treatment plants are being built or upgraded by the municipal administration to make Buddha Nullah pollution-free, but it is highly unlikely that these projects will be successful because the domestic discharge of the city is more than 1,000 MLD and the plants are not being constructed as per the required capacity.”

Before building the plant, the flow in Buddha Nullah was not properly checked, he said, adding that the discharge of the dyeing industry is about 120 MLD, while the domestic discharge is about 874 MLD.

Recently, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had pulled up Ludhiana MC for not complying with the guidelines.
