LUCKNOW: On World Standards Day, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Friday felicitated Mr. Yawer Ali Shah for his outstanding contribution in formulating certification protocols for natural dyes that are indigenous to India. Union Minister of State, Mr Ashwini Kumar Choubey honoured him at the BIS headquarters.

Yawer Ali Shah has been named the ‘Project Leader cum Convener’ of a special panel to prepare certification protocols for indigenous dye products by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This is the first project in the world under which a certification protocol has been developed for natural dye products. Mr. Shah is also the Co-founder and CEO of Lucknow-based AMA Herbal Pvt Ltd. For the past several years, they have been campaigning for the promotion of natural resources and environmental protection for sustainable development.

It is his hardwork and determination due to which the textile industry in India has started paying special attention to the use of natural dyes in place of chemical dyes. Mr. Yawer Ali Shah has been associated with the Textile Specialty Chemicals and Dyestuffs Sectional Committee, TxD 07, BIS Committee of Textiles Department for the last 7 years. He has made outstanding contributions in formulating 3 benchmarks on natural colours, which include Standards on Natural Indigo, Rubia Madar, Katha, Lac, Punica Granatum, Rheum Emody, Canna Indica, Gulmehandi, Teak, Arjun Bark.

As the project leader in Working Group ISO-TC 38/WG in natural materials for textiles, India has developed 3 ISO standards on natural dyes. These include the standards on Madder, Catachu, Lac, Punica Granatum. As an active member of TXD 07 Textile Specialty Chemicals and Dyestuffs Sectional Committee, Mr. Shah has also contributed to the revision of standards on Dyestuffs and Auxiliaries. As part of the standard promotional activity of BIS, he has also contributed in organising a webinar on Colours for Textiles on the eve of 75 years of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Mr. Yawer Ali Shah said, “This is a moment of pride for me to receive this honour. This award is an honour for the entire team that has been talking about developing a protocol for the use of natural dyes in the textile industry for sustainable development, and about the ISO standards.

“Currently we have numerous natural options available for natural dyeing substitutes. Among many things, a lot of money will be required to reduce the carbon footprint during the production process.” he said. This has also been proven in the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) reports that the use of natural dyes can reduce the carbon footprint manifold as compared to synthetic dyes. If we are to achieve the objective of sustainable development, efforts have to be made from today itself.
